Boat capsizes in Lake Victoria

Four Coast Guard officers were rescued after their boat capsized in Lake Victoria while returning to Kisumu from a presidential event on August 30. The boat experienced mechanical issues near Ndere Island, leading to the incident, which prompted a swift eight-hour rescue operation involving multiple agencies. Fortunately, all officers were found alive and are receiving medical treatment for hypothermia, with no fatalities reported. Director General of the Kenya Maritime Authority, Martin Munga, highlighted the need for a rescue center near the lake, especially after President William Ruto's recent commitment to enhance safety measures for fishermen. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about maritime safety in the region, with Ruto previously addressing the high number of fatalities among fishermen.
