Greece's Supreme Court Clears Intelligence of Spyware Use

Greece's Supreme Court has concluded a two-year investigation, finding no evidence that the National Intelligence Service (EYP) used the Predator spyware in a significant wiretap scandal involving state surveillance of multiple officials, including politicians and journalists. Supreme Court prosecutor Georgia Adeilini stated that state agencies were not involved with the malware, despite extensive probes and testimonies from over 40 witnesses. The investigation, which also examined the actions of private companies linked to the spyware, indicated potential criminal prosecution against those corporate representatives. Opposition leaders expressed dismay at the court's findings, highlighting a loss of trust in the justice system amidst public outcry regarding state surveillance. Notably, the scandal had previously led to high-profile resignations, including that of the EYP's chief. The legality of the surveillance actions remains contested, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asserting that they were lawful.
