The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has reprimanded the Delhi government and associated agencies for their failure to identify the responsible authority for regulating illegal groundwater extraction in Delhi. During a hearing concerning illegal extraction by 536 hotels in Paharganj, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava expressed frustration over the lack of clarity among the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the Delhi government regarding their responsibilities. The tribunal directed the Chief Secretary of Delhi to determine which body is accountable for enforcing groundwater regulations and to report on actions taken against violators. The situation has been described as 'unfortunate' and has persisted for several years without resolution. The case is set for further review on September 3, 2024.
