Iva Jovic Becomes Youngest U.S. Open Winner
Sixteen-year-old Californian Iva Jovic achieved a remarkable victory in her Grand Slam debut by defeating 2023 Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, during the U.S. Open. This win makes Jovic the youngest American to win a women's main-draw match at the U.S. Open since 2000. Jovic, ranked 389th in the world, entered the tournament with a wildcard after winning the USTA Billie Jean King Girls' National Championship. Despite her youth, Jovic displayed strategic poise, winning 69% of her first serve points and converting 50% of her break point opportunities. She will face World No. 31 Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round and plans to compete in the junior event as well. Balancing her burgeoning tennis career with online schooling, Jovic aims to continue improving every day.
