Pro-Khalistan Rallies Honor Beant Singh Assassin
On August 31, pro-Khalistan groups in Canada held rallies in Vancouver and Toronto to commemorate the 29th anniversary of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh's assassination by suicide bomber Dilawar Singh Babbar in 1995. The events featured floats depicting the assassination scene, with slogans like 'Beanta Bombed to Death' and messages celebrating Babbar's actions as a sacrifice against perceived Sikh genocide. Inderjeet Singh Gosal, a key organizer of the Khalistan Referendum, led the Toronto rally and referred to participants as 'offspring' of Babbar, despite having received a warning from law enforcement regarding threats to his life. The bombing claimed 17 lives and was carried out by Babbar Khalsa International, a group listed as a terrorist entity in Canada. This commemoration follows similar controversial displays earlier this year that included an effigy of Indira Gandhi, reflecting ongoing tensions surrounding the Khalistan movement. Canada's Minister of Public Safety condemned these displays, stating that the promotion of violence is unacceptable in Canada.
