Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old born to a Nigerian father and South African mother, was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria after withdrawing from the Miss South Africa contest due to xenophobic backlash and a controversy over her nationality. The South African government had investigated claims of identity theft by her mother, leading to heightened tensions. Adetshina withdrew from the South African competition citing safety concerns but was later invited by Nigerian organizers to represent her father's homeland.
