Delhi High Court Denies Stay on Jung Demolition
The Delhi High Court has dismissed a petition challenging the demolition of national shooting coach Samaresh Jung's residence, ruling that the petitioner, his brother Sameer Jung, has no legal claim to the sub-leased property. The court cited a March 1, 2024 notice that deemed around 1,000 occupants in the Khyber Pass area as unauthorized and initiated a demolition drive. Justice Sanjeev Narula acknowledged the contributions of Samaresh Jung, who coached Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker, but emphasized that the land is public and no exceptions could be made. The petitioners argued that the family had resided there as sub-tenants for about 70 years without due process, but the court upheld the demolition order. The ruling reflects the government's stance on clearing unauthorized occupations despite individual circumstances. The case underscores ongoing tensions surrounding land rights and public space in urban areas.
