Typhoon Gaemi Causes Fatalities and Sinking off Taiwan
Typhoon Gaemi, the strongest to hit Taiwan in eight years, has resulted in the deaths of at least two people and left nine crew members missing after their Tanzania-flagged freighter sank off Kaohsiung. The storm made landfall with winds reaching 227 km/h, leading to widespread destruction, power outages affecting over 500,000 households, and the closure of schools and financial markets for a second day. Authorities are struggling to conduct search operations for the missing crew due to adverse weather conditions. As Gaemi progresses towards China, heavy rains are expected to continue impacting Taiwan and neighboring regions, including the Philippines, where flooding has been reported. Precautionary measures have been initiated in China's Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, with over 150,000 people relocated from vulnerable coastal areas. The typhoon's aftermath has caused significant disruptions, including the cancellation of hundreds of flights and train services across Taiwan.
