Ice Cave Collapse in Iceland Kills 1, Injures Others
An ice cave collapse at the Breidamerkurjokull glacier in southeast Iceland resulted in one fatality, two serious injuries, and two people still missing. The incident occurred around 3 pm local time when a group of 25 tourists, accompanied by guides, were exploring the glacier. Rescue operations have been challenging due to difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions, necessitating the use of hand tools for ice removal. The search for the missing individuals was suspended at nightfall and is set to resume in the morning. Over 150 rescue personnel, including coast guard helicopters and ambulances, have been deployed. The glacier is a popular tourist destination, emphasizing the inherent risks despite guided tours.
