This decision comes after a federal judge criticized UCLA's handling of protests that allegedly created antisemitic zones, calling for improved safety measures for Jewish students. UC President Michael Drake emphasized the need to balance free speech rights with community safety, noting that while most protests are peaceful, some have devolved into violence. The new policies, which also apply to California State University (CSU), prohibit unauthorized structures and restrict camping on university property. Critics argue that these measures could infringe on free speech rights, while university officials maintain the need for order and accessibility on campuses. Both UC and CSU are revising their protest policies amid heightened scrutiny and ongoing tensions related to recent protests.
