Landslide at Kampala Landfill Claims 30 Lives
The death toll from the landslide at Kiteezi landfill in Kampala has risen to 30, with ongoing recovery efforts revealing at least 39 individuals still missing. The disaster, triggered by heavy rains, buried homes, livestock, and residents under mountains of waste, prompting national concern. Government officials, including President Yoweri Museveni, have called for investigations into the allowance of residential areas near hazardous sites, and have mobilized the army for search operations. Over 1,000 people have been affected, with 56 households displaced and taking refuge in temporary shelters. As recovery efforts continue, the government is exploring alternative waste management solutions to prevent future incidents. The situation has been declared a national disaster, underscoring the urgent need for improved environmental safety measures in the region.
