Elderly Man Dies in Grand Canyon Boat Accident
An 80-year-old man tragically died after falling from a boat in the Colorado River at Grand Canyon National Park, marking the fifth fatality in the park within a month. The incident occurred near Fossil Rapid during a commercial river trip when the boat capsized, and attempts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful. The National Park Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner. This month has seen a series of tragic events, including the deaths of a 33-year-old woman swept away in a flash flood, a 20-year-old woman found deceased below the rim, and two other fatalities related to falls and BASE jumping. The park typically averages 10 to 15 deaths annually, with 13 reported so far this year. Visitors are urged to adhere to safety regulations and familiarize themselves with park guidelines before their trips.
