Singapore Premier Plans More Women Candidates

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced plans to increase the representation of women in Parliament by fielding more women candidates in the upcoming General Election. He emphasized the importance of diversity in political teams, stating that working with both men and women leads to better decision-making. Currently, close to one-third of PAP MPs are women, a significant increase from the 1970s when all MPs were men. Wong highlighted that advancing gender equality should not be perceived as a zero-sum issue and that gains for women do not come at the expense of men. He also acknowledged challenges faced by boys and young men, urging that discussions around gender equality should include their concerns to foster unity.
