The 2023 Monitoring the Future survey reveals that cannabis and hallucinogen use among adults aged 19-30 and 35-50 remains at historically high levels, with 42% of younger adults reporting cannabis use and 10% indicating daily use. Among adults aged 35-50, 29% reported using cannabis last year. Notably, for the first time, women aged 19-30 reported higher cannabis use than men in the same age group, while men aged 35-50 continued to outpace women. Hallucinogen use also saw an increase, with 9% of younger adults and 4% of older adults reporting usage. The findings suggest a shift away from tobacco and declining alcohol use, particularly among younger adults, while nicotine and cannabis vaping rates were also noted to be high. The survey underscores the need for further research on the implications of these trends, particularly concerning the risks and benefits of cannabis and psychedelics.
