Mexicans flee to Guatemala
In recent weeks, nearly 600 Mexicans have fled from the violence of drug cartels in Chiapas, Mexico, seeking refuge in Guatemala, particularly in the municipality of Cuilco. This exodus is driven by ongoing conflicts between the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, which have led to widespread insecurity and forced recruitment in rural areas. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo has stated that his government is coordinating aid for the displaced individuals, who include vulnerable populations such as elderly and children. However, Mexican authorities, including President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, have been criticized for their inaction, with calls from local bishops for intervention to restore order. Refugees have expressed fear of returning to Mexico, citing the lack of protection against cartel violence. The humanitarian response in Guatemala has been met with community support, as locals scramble to provide shelter and basic necessities for those fleeing the violence.
