Chinese Scientists Develop Hydrogel for Osteoarthritis Treatment
Chinese scientists have developed a promising new lubricating material that may help treat early-stage osteoarthritis and slow its progression. The innovative hydrogel microspheres, created by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Xiangya Hospital, target damaged cartilage and provide lubrication, significantly reducing symptoms in tests with rats. The material combines gelatin methacrylate and poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) to enhance cell growth and hydration, while an antibody is used to specifically anchor the microspheres to injured cartilage sites. This advancement addresses a condition affecting over 528 million people globally, which results in pain, swelling, and stiffness due to cartilage breakdown. The findings were published in the journal Advanced Materials on August 18, marking a significant step in osteoarthritis research.
