Chief Justice Advocates National Judicial Recruitment
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud has called for the establishment of an All India Judicial Service (AIJS) to address significant vacancies of 28% in judicial personnel and 27% in non-judicial staff, which hinder the judicial system's ability to manage a backlog of 4.5 crore cases. During a conference marking 75 years of the Supreme Court, he emphasized the need for national integration in judicial recruitment, transcending regional biases and promoting a standardized recruitment process. The current disposal rate stands at 95%, yet achieving a better disposal-to-filing ratio requires skilled personnel and enhanced judicial infrastructure. He highlighted that only 6.7% of district court facilities are female-friendly, despite recent recruitment trends showing a higher proportion of women. Chandrachud also mentioned ongoing efforts to align state judicial training with global best practices through a comprehensive curriculum. The AIJS concept, previously recommended by the Law Commission, has faced resistance but remains a crucial step towards strengthening the justice delivery system.
