Candy factory to close
The Annabelle Candy Company, known for its iconic candies like Big Hunk, Rocky Road, and Abba Zaba, has announced the closure of its manufacturing facility in Hayward, California, effective September 27, 2024, due to significant financial challenges and lack of sustainability. This decision will result in the layoff of 43 employees, as stated by CEO Michael T. McGee. Despite the closure, production of its popular brands will continue at other Promise Confections facilities, although it remains uncertain whether these will be made at plants in Washington and Minnesota. Founded in 1950, Annabelle has a long history, including a Guinness World Record for the largest taffy, achieved in 2016. The news has left many local candy bar fans saddened, reflecting the brand's strong community ties and nostalgic value. The closure marks the end of an era for a company that has been part of the Bay Area's confectionery landscape for 74 years.
