Mpox Vaccines Arrive in Africa Amid Outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) is set to deliver 230,000 doses of mpox vaccines to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) shortly, with additional supplies being rolled out in Nigeria. Nigeria will receive 5,000 doses immediately while the DRC anticipates 65,000 doses from the US and Gavi. Experts highlight significant disparities in vaccine availability across Africa, with many nations lacking sufficient doses despite the escalating outbreak. Local vaccine manufacturers, such as Biovac in South Africa, are preparing to produce mpox vaccines, yet they face challenges related to market stability and production sustainability. Overall, there is an urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure and international support to combat the mpox crisis effectively. The WHO's emergency licenses for vaccine distribution are expected within two weeks to facilitate rapid deployment.
