Archaeologists have unearthed the largest known ancient astronomical observatory in Egypt, located in Buto (modern Tell el-Faraeen), dating back to the 6th century BCE. The L-shaped structure spans over 9,150 square feet and features an east-facing entrance, facilitating the observation of sunrises. Key discoveries include a large sloping sundial, or 'shadow clock', used for precise solar measurements, and frescoes depicting astronomical scenes and deities, reinforcing the intertwining of astronomy with religious practices. This site, initially thought to be a temple, reveals the advanced astronomical knowledge of the ancient Egyptians, who relied on celestial observations for agricultural and ceremonial calendars. Head of the archaeological mission, Hossam Ghonim, highlighted that the findings exceeded expectations and underscore the significant role of astronomy in ancient Egyptian culture. The site serves as a testament to the sophistication of early scientific practices integrated with religious beliefs.
