French synagogue attack suspect
A 33-year-old Algerian suspect was arrested in Nîmes following an attempted arson attack on a synagogue in La Grande-Motte, France, where an explosion injured a police officer. The suspect, who had a Palestinian flag around his waist, set fire to the synagogue's entrance and nearby vehicles, provoking a large police response involving around 200 officers. French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal condemned the attack as anti-Semitic and linked it to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. He noted that an 'absolute tragedy' was narrowly avoided as the synagogue was largely empty at the time. The Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office is investigating charges of attempted murder and terrorism-related offenses. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin praised the police for their professionalism during the operation that led to the suspect's capture after a brief gunfight.
