Ban on Jamaat-e-Islami Officially Lifted
Bangladesh's interim government has lifted the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's largest Islamist party, which was initially imposed by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's administration on August 1 under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The decision to reverse the ban was announced on August 28, citing a lack of specific evidence linking the party to terrorism or violence. This move allows Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, to resume public activities and participate in elections for the first time since 2013. The interim government, led by Prof. Mohammad Yunus, has also launched an investigation into alleged enforced disappearances during Hasina's tenure. This development follows Hasina's resignation and departure amid mass protests against her government.
