Germany Begins Construction of Military Base in Lithuania

Lithuania has commenced construction of Germany's first permanent military base abroad since World War II, strategically located near the Belarus border. The base will accommodate approximately 4,800 German troops and 200 civilians, with plans for full operational capability by 2027. This initiative represents a significant step in bolstering regional security amidst rising tensions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, Germany's military support for Ukraine is reportedly set to decline sharply, raising concerns about its commitment to European defense.
