An international team led by Dr. Mary Hagedorn from the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute has proposed creating a lunar biorepository to preserve Earth's biodiversity. This facility would store cryopreserved samples of endangered species in the Moon's permanently shadowed regions where temperatures remain below -196°C. Such conditions allow for long-term storage without human intervention or power, safeguarding samples from climate change, natural disasters, and geopolitical conflicts. The proposal addresses challenges like transportation, radiation protection, and international governance. Initial plans include preserving animal skin samples, starting with the starry goby fish. This innovative solution aims to ensure the survival of species threatened by human-induced climate change and habitat destruction.
