According to genealogical research by historian Stephen McCracken, Brown, born in Northern Ireland in 1776, is Harris's four-times paternal great-grandfather. Brown owned over 120 slaves and received compensation after slavery was abolished in the British Empire. Harris's father, Donald Harris, acknowledged this ancestry in a 2019 article, stating that it traces back to his grandmother, Christiana Brown.
