Iain Wares Can Be Extradited to UK

Iain Wares, an 85-year-old former teacher accused of historical sexual abuse, has been ruled extraditable by a South African court to face charges in Scotland. Wares, who taught at Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College in the 1960s and 70s, is facing a total of 74 charges, with the court allowing extradition on three specific charges due to the expiration of other charges under South African law. The ruling has been welcomed by former pupils, including BBC presenter Nicky Campbell, who has publicly recounted witnessing Wares's abuse. South Africa's Minister of Justice now needs to approve the extradition, following a lengthy legal battle that began with a request from Scottish authorities in 2018. Wares has been living in Cape Town and had previously challenged the extradition ruling. He has been described by the court as a 'self-confessed paedophile' acknowledging his crimes.
