Toronto Woman Charged with Hate Speech
Amaka Sunnberger, 46, has been arrested by the Toronto Police Service for allegedly making hate-motivated threats against members of the Nigerian community on TikTok. She was taken into custody on September 1, 2024, after the police received a report regarding her online comments made around August 25, which included threats of death targeting specific individuals. Sunnberger is charged with uttering threats and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on September 2, 2024. The investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offense, and the case may involve further scrutiny by the Hate Crime Unit. The incident was initiated following a report by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), underscoring the gravity of the situation. If convicted, hate will be considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.
