Wildfires Rage Across Western Turkey
Turkey is facing a severe wildfire crisis, with at least 247 fires reported from August 15 to 18, exacerbated by record-high temperatures and strong winds. Key provinces affected include Muğla, İzmir, and Aydın, prompting mass evacuations, including 900 residents from five districts in İzmir. Despite extensive firefighting efforts using aerial support, many areas remain under threat, with no reported human casualties but significant property damage, including the destruction of 16 buildings. The fires have also endangered historical sites, notably the Gallipoli battle site where graves were scorched. Authorities have detained four individuals in connection to the fires, and the General Directorate of Forestry warns of a continued high risk for the next ten days. The Turkish government urges the public to refrain from activities that may spark new fires as investigations continue into the causes of the outbreaks.
