Petition Challenges Varanasi Meat Shop Ban

A petition has been filed with the Allahabad High Court challenging the Varanasi Municipal Corporation's (VMC) order to close meat shops along the Kanwar Yatra route during the month of Sawan. The National Loktantrik Party's president, Mohammad Suhail, argues that the closure infringes on the fundamental rights to trade and personal liberty guaranteed under Articles 19(1)(g) and 21 of the Indian Constitution. The petitioner contends that this directive, which affects many Muslim shopkeepers, is discriminatory and threatens their livelihoods. Historically, meat shops have remained open during the Kanwar Yatra, and the sudden closure is seen as an unreasonable restriction on individual rights and dietary choices. VMC officials claimed the closure was intended to avoid issues for Kanwariyas during their pilgrimage. The petition seeks an urgent hearing and the quashing of the VMC's order, emphasizing the need for balance between religious practices and civil rights.
