Resident doctors across India initiated a nationwide strike following the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College. This protest, led by the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA), severely disrupted outpatient and elective services in numerous state-run hospitals while emergency services remained operational. The strike was called off after Union Health Minister JP Nadda assured the implementation of a Central Healthcare Protection Act to enhance the safety of medical personnel. However, some medical institutions, including AIIMS and several state hospitals, continue to protest, demanding more concrete actions. The Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough probe. Despite the government's assurances, the protests have highlighted significant concerns regarding the safety of healthcare workers in India.
