Keto diet for weight loss
A recent study from the University of Bath highlights the potential health risks associated with the ketogenic diet, which is popular among athletes, bodybuilders, and celebrities for weight loss. The 12-week trial involving 53 healthy adults revealed that while participants following a keto diet lost more weight, they also experienced elevated cholesterol levels and a reduction in beneficial gut bacteria, specifically Bifidobacteria. This decrease in fiber intake, averaging around 15 grams per day, could lead to long-term health issues, including increased risks of digestive disorders and weakened immune function. In contrast, those on a low-sugar diet lost less weight but had significantly improved cholesterol levels without altering gut bacteria. Experts recommend opting for a low-sugar diet as a safer alternative for weight loss without the adverse health impacts linked to keto.
