Angus McDonald Wins Archibald People's Choice Award

Angus McDonald has won the 2024 Archibald Prize People's Choice award for his portrait of renowned academic Marcia Langton, marking his second win in this category. Langton, a prominent figure in the Indigenous rights movement and a key advocate for the First Nations Voice to Parliament, is depicted in a thoughtful pose that suggests her passing the torch to a younger generation of activists. McDonald described the honor as a recognition of Langton's significant contributions to Indigenous recognition and reconciliation in Australia over the past 50 years. The Archibald exhibition, which includes 57 finalists, highlights a strong presence of Indigenous subjects this year. The main Archibald Prize was awarded to Laura Jones for her portrait of author Tim Winton, while the Sulman Prize went to Naomi Kantjuriny. The exhibition runs until September 8 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
