Amit Shah on Wayanad
Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the devastating landslides in Kerala's Wayanad district, claiming that the central government had issued early warnings about the disaster on July 23, 24, and 25, ahead of the landslides that resulted in at least 174 fatalities and many injuries. He criticized the Kerala government for not acting on these warnings and asserted that timely evacuations could have minimized the loss of life, referencing successful disaster management in other states. Meanwhile, the Hume Centre for Ecology and Wildlife Biology reported that they had alerted local authorities 16 hours before the disaster based on rainfall data indicating conditions conducive to landslides. Shah expressed condolences and reiterated the central government's support for Kerala during this crisis, while also defending the effectiveness of the national early warning system against opposition criticism. As rescue operations continue, the situation remains critical with many individuals still missing.
