John Lewis Plans 215 Rental Homes in Reading

The John Lewis Partnership has submitted plans to transform a former distribution center in Reading into 215 rental homes, representing an approximately £80 million investment. This initiative marks the partnership's continuing push to diversify its operations, despite a recent strategic shift back towards retail. The proposed development will include a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom flats, as well as shared amenities like fitness and co-working spaces and green areas. Katherine Russell, the director of build-to-rent, emphasized that the project aims to alleviate pressure on Reading's housing market by revitalizing brownfield land. If approved, construction is expected to commence in early 2026, with completion anticipated by 2028. This project follows previous approvals for similar housing schemes in Bromley and Ealing, showcasing John Lewis's commitment to becoming a significant player in the rental market.
