Blue Earth County Votes to Remove Rapidan Dam
The Blue Earth County Board of Commissioners voted to remove the Rapidan Dam near Mankato following its failure during severe flooding on June 24, 2024. The dam, built in the early 1900s, suffered significant damage as heavy rains eroded the riverbanks and created a new channel. This decision ends a long-standing debate over the aging infrastructure, with previous estimates indicating repair costs of $15 million versus removal costs of $82 million. The removal will be funded through FEMA and involves replacing the nearby County Road 9 bridge, which was also compromised. Officials plan to restore the Blue Earth River post-removal and improve recreational facilities along its banks. The county is coordinating with federal and state agencies for necessary funding and assistance.
