CDCR Investigates Inmate Deaths as Homicides
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is investigating the death of inmate Darryl Hudson at California State Prison, Sacramento, as a homicide after he was attacked by five other inmates. Hudson, who was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and robbery, was struck multiple times by Darryn Mayberry during a fight, causing him to lose consciousness and later die in the hospital. The attackers, including Mayberry, Robert Keller, Tray Watson, Marcell Battiest, and Otis Wyatt, have been placed in restricted housing as the investigation continues. No staff or other inmates were injured in the altercation. This incident follows another recent inmate death at Salinas Valley State Prison, where Miguel A. Espino allegedly attacked and killed Michael R. Spengler. Both cases are currently under investigation by the CDCR and respective county coroner offices to determine the exact causes of death.
