Over 100 Earthquakes Hit West Texas
West Texas has experienced over 100 earthquakes in the past week, with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 5.1. The most significant was a 5.1 magnitude quake felt as far north as the Red River and as close as Downtown Dallas. Experts from the USGS and other agencies attribute this seismic activity to oil and gas operations, particularly the injection of water and carbon dioxide into the ground. The Railroad Commission of Texas is investigating disposal wells near the epicenter to assess their role in the tremors. Scurry County, which lies on the eastern edge of the oil-rich Permian Basin, has been significantly affected, prompting local authorities to issue a disaster declaration. Despite the frequent quakes, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage.
