Experts from the USGS and other agencies attribute this seismic activity to oil and gas operations, particularly the injection of water and carbon dioxide into the ground. The Railroad Commission of Texas is investigating disposal wells near the epicenter to assess their role in the tremors. Scurry County, which lies on the eastern edge of the oil-rich Permian Basin, has been significantly affected, prompting local authorities to issue a disaster declaration.
