Matthew Farwell, a former Massachusetts police detective, has been charged with the strangulation murder of 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore, who was pregnant with his child at the time of her death in February 2021. Prosecutors allege that Farwell, 38, killed Birchmore to prevent her from disclosing their sexual relationship, which began when she was 15 and continued into her adulthood. Initially ruled a suicide, Birchmore's death has been reclassified following a federal investigation that uncovered new evidence. Court documents indicate that Farwell used his position to groom and exploit Birchmore, ultimately leading to her murder shortly after she informed him of her pregnancy. He was arrested on August 28, 2024, and faces serious charges, including killing a victim or witness. If convicted, he could face life in prison or even the death penalty.
