Maharashtra Launches Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Scheme

The Maharashtra government is set to launch the 'Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin' scheme on August 17, providing ₹1,500 monthly financial assistance to over one crore eligible women aged 21-65 with a family income below ₹2.5 lakh. This initiative, modeled after Madhya Pradesh's 'Ladli Behna Yojana', also includes an app for online applications and support from local officials for those unable to apply digitally. The scheme aims to enhance women's financial independence and is seen as a strategic move ahead of upcoming Assembly elections, with initial payments of ₹3,000 already distributed to some beneficiaries. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the program's long-term commitment and its potential economic benefits, while also addressing opposition criticism as unfounded. The launch coincides with the Raksha Bandhan festival, symbolizing a commitment to women's welfare. The government plans to allocate approximately ₹46,000 crore annually for this scheme.
