Morgan State Launches Initiative for Maternal Health

Maternal mortality rates have declined by 42% in USAID's 25 priority countries since 2000, yet progress has stagnated, with over 800 women dying daily from pregnancy-related causes globally, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. In the U.S., Baltimore's maternal health programs, such as the Enhancing Maternal Health Initiative, aim to address disparities, particularly for single mothers, with a $50 million investment to improve care through historically black colleges. Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Jersey has seen significant improvements in patient satisfaction and decision-making autonomy following the implementation of the TeamBirth communication process. Meanwhile, Morgan State University leads a research initiative focused on maternal health disparities, particularly affecting mothers of color, as it collaborates with 15 other universities. Additionally, Organon is investing $30 million to reduce unplanned pregnancies through a global initiative targeting women's reproductive health needs. These efforts collectively aim to enhance maternal health outcomes across various demographics and regions.
