60 arrested in Badlapur

In response to violent protests over a school sexual abuse case in Badlapur, Maharashtra, authorities shut down internet services, registered four FIRs against 1,500 individuals, and arrested 60 people. The protests erupted after the arrest of a school sweeper accused of sexually abusing two four-year-old girls, leading to a day-long bandh and significant disruption in the area. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde labeled the protests as politically motivated, while the opposition MVA has called for further protests due to perceived government inaction. Amidst the unrest, various political figures visited the site, raising concerns over the appointment of a prosecutor connected to the ruling party. The situation has now calmed with heavy police presence, while the accused's custody has been extended amidst calls from local lawyers to boycott defending him. The Maharashtra education department has also mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in schools to enhance safety.
