Shell Announces Polaris Carbon Capture Project

Shell plc has made a final investment decision to proceed with the Polaris carbon capture project at its Scotford refinery and chemicals complex in Alberta, Canada, aiming to capture 650,000 tons of CO2 annually. This project will reduce emissions by 40% at the refinery and 22% at the chemical complex. In partnership with ATCO EnPower, Shell will also develop the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub to provide permanent underground storage for the captured CO2. Both projects are expected to begin operations by the end of 2028. The decision was significantly influenced by the recent approval of the federal carbon capture sequestration tax credit. Shell aims for these initiatives to contribute to its goal of becoming a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050.
