Bulgaria is set to hold its seventh snap general election on October 27, as announced by President Rumen Radev, due to the failure of political parties to form a coalition government. A caretaker cabinet led by Dimitar Glavchev will be sworn in to manage the country until the election. This political instability has persisted since 2020, following massive anti-corruption protests that led to the ousting of a coalition government. The last election in June saw the lowest voter turnout since the fall of communism, at just 34%, with expectations that turnout may further decline in October. The ongoing stalemate is hampering Bulgaria's access to EU funds and its aspirations to join the eurozone and Schengen area. Political analysts warn that the instability could lead to increased support for pro-Russian parties in the upcoming election.
