Edinburgh Implements Firework Ban in Four Areas

Edinburgh City Council has introduced temporary Firework Control Zones (FCZs) in Niddrie, Balerno, Seafield, and Calton Hill from November 1-10, making it illegal to set off private fireworks in these areas. This decision aims to address anti-social behaviour and reduce the negative impact of fireworks on animals and vulnerable individuals, particularly following violent incidents during last year's Bonfire Night. While there was support for the ban from community and animal welfare groups, calls for a city-wide ban were rejected due to concerns from the Scottish Government and local emergency services about enforcement capabilities. Violent clashes with emergency workers, including attacks involving petrol bombs and fireworks, have heightened the need for these restrictions. Licensing will be required for public displays within the control zones, marking a significant step in changing Scotland's relationship with fireworks. Similar consultations on firework bans are currently underway in Glasgow and Dundee.
