Paul Watson Detained in Greenland Amid Extradition Request
Paul Watson, the 73-year-old anti-whaling activist and founder of the Sea Shepherd conservation group, will remain in detention in Greenland as a court deliberates on his extradition to Japan. Watson was arrested on July 21 under a 12-year-old Interpol 'Red Notice' issued by Japan, which accuses him of causing damage and injury to a Japanese whaling vessel in the Antarctic in 2010. His detention is set to last until September 5, while supporters, including French President Emmanuel Macron and celebrities like Pierce Brosnan, have rallied for his release, citing concerns over Japan's extradition request. Watson's recent arrest has prompted protests and a petition that has garnered nearly 60,000 signatures. If extradited, he faces serious charges that could lead to lengthy prison sentences. The final decision on extradition will be made by the Danish Ministry of Justice.
