South Korea Proposes 3.6% Increase in Defense Budget
Poland plans to increase its defense spending to 4.7% of GDP in 2025, up from 4.1% in 2024, making it NATO's biggest spender in absolute terms and fifth-largest in total expenditure. This increase, driven by Poland's role as a frontline state near Russia and Ukraine, aims to bolster its military capabilities while seeking EU support to offset costs. Meanwhile, South Korea proposes a 3.6% increase in its defense budget for 2025 to 61.5 trillion won (approximately $46.3 billion), marking the first time the budget will exceed 60 trillion won. This budget aims to enhance military capabilities against North Korean threats, with funding allocated for weapon purchases and operational costs. Both nations are responding to heightened security concerns in their respective regions, highlighting the global trend of increasing military expenditures.
