Jeweller Charged with Rape After Theft Report

A 55-year-old jeweller in Mumbai sought police action against his 27-year-old domestic help for allegedly stealing Rs 15,000, but instead found himself charged with sexual assault after the woman disclosed that he had raped her multiple times. The jeweller's wife suspected the maid of stealing Rs 25,000 in cash and jewellery, prompting him to file the theft complaint. Upon interrogation, the domestic help admitted to the theft but broke down and reported ongoing sexual abuse by the jeweller, which she had previously concealed due to fear for her job and threats from him. She claimed the assaults occurred in the jeweller's bedroom, often when his wife was away, and that he had physically intimidated her to prevent disclosure. The police are treating her as a complainant in the rape case and have issued a notice to the jeweller, who has been hospitalized with health issues. Investigations continue as the jeweller is expected to be arrested soon.
