Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng Not Seeking Reelection

Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng has announced he will not seek reelection for a second term due to ongoing health issues, following an extended medical leave earlier this summer. In a statement, Ho, who took office in December 2019, expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure but emphasized that his health was not fully restored, prompting his decision for the long-term development of Macau. His term is set to end in December, and he reassured support for the next chief executive and the governance of Macau under the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle. Ho is the first chief executive to serve only one term, as his administration dealt with significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impacts. The next election is scheduled for October, and the election committee, composed mainly of pro-Beijing figures, will select his successor.
