Green Hydrogen in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin district will soon become the site of India's first large-scale commercial production of green hydrogen, led by Singapore's Sembcorp Industries, which is investing ₹36,238 crore to establish a green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing unit. Spanning 160 acres, the plant is expected to produce 200,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually for export to Japan, with the front-end engineering and design phase already underway. This initiative aligns with Tamil Nadu's goal to reduce carbon emissions, as the state government recently approved green energy policies aimed at boosting renewable energy production. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation plans to set up small hydropower plants on local rivers to further enhance the state's green energy capabilities. Chief Minister M K Stalin noted that this project signifies Tamil Nadu's leadership in the green hydrogen sector, reflecting strong ties between India, Singapore, and Japan. The project represents both a significant investment in sustainable energy and a commitment to international collaboration in environmental initiatives.
