Columbus Zoo Elephants Expect Calves in 2025
The Columbus Zoo has announced a historic milestone with two Asian elephants, Phoebe and Sunny, simultaneously pregnant and expecting calves in 2025. Sabu, a bull elephant from the Cincinnati Zoo, is the father of both calves, marking his significant contribution to the genetic diversity and conservation of the endangered species. Zoo officials are optimistic about the pregnancies, which were confirmed through routine hormone monitoring. This development is part of the Species Survival Plan coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo is also expanding its habitat to accommodate the growing herd. Separately, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo in California celebrated the birth of two African elephant calves within two weeks, highlighting similar breeding efforts to sustain elephant populations in captivity.
